Yes it is stupid. Fortunately for the middle managers of a BigCo it is not important to satisfy customers.

If we did not have [somewhat] working Dropbox solution - we would probably try S3 or backblaze
With solutions like that we have to pay for a full month of hosting even if we delete backup right away. We also would need to find and finetune code that would upload our backup to S3. But that could, actually be faster than dealing with Dropbox setup as a service.
