Mindhunter -- again

I am rewatching Mindhunter (I watched it first time when it was released -- about 7 months ago).

My today impression is that I already forgot ~70% of essential details ... or have not noticed them in the first place 7 months ago).

L.A. Confidential

I watched L.A. Confidential this weekend.
It got "99% fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes for a reason.
The movie depicts rotten and cynical culture around Los Angeles police department in 1950.

Lord of the Rings

Today I, finally, watched Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in full (it is available on Netflix now).

Over the years (since the release in 2003) I watched bits and pieces of Lord of the Rings, but never the full movie.

My impression: a solid fairy story. It is a good movie, but not among the best in my taste. "Total Recall", "Blade Runner", "Terminator 2" and even "Shrek" and "Matrix" - are better and more appealing to re-watch.

I have another unwatched classic yet: [original] "Star Wars".

Manhunt

I just finished watching "Manhunt" - fictionalized story about hunt for Unabomber:
https://www.netflix.com/title/80176878

The movie is good, but not perfect.
The good parts are:
1) Interesting perspective on some difficulties FBI investigators had to deal with in their internal kitchen.
Interaction with the press.
Story of Kaczynski family (who pointed to Ted as a possible Unabomber).
2) Interesting view on Ted Kaczynski line of reasoning and emotions.

The bad part: fiction in general.
In particular:
- Blowing drama out of proportion.
- Fake timeline and deadlines (urgencies).

11 days ago I was reading "Industrial Society and Its Future" by Theodore Kaczynski.
At the time of the reading I did not link him to Unabomber.
His claims looked like a mixture of insightful and junk ideas.

Some of the insightful quotes:
---
http://editions-hache.com/essais/pdf/kaczynski2.pdf
If they are humane they may use propaganda or
other psychological or biological techniques to reduce the
birth rate until the mass of humanity becomes extinct, leaving
the world to the elite.
Or, if the elite consists of softhearted
liberals, they may decide to play the role of good
shepherds to the rest of the human race. They will see
to it that everyone’s physical needs are satisfied, that all
children are raised under psychologically hygienic conditions,
that everyone has a wholesome hobby to keep him
busy, and that anyone who may become dissatisfied undergoes
“treatment” to cure his “problem.” Of course, life
will be so purposeless that people will have to be biologically
or psychologically engineered either to remove their
need for the power process or to make them “sublimate”
their drive for power into some harmless hobby. These engineered
human beings may be happy in such a society,
but they most certainly will not be free. They will have
been reduced to the status of domestic animals.
.....
In the long run (say a few centuries from now) it
is likely that neither the human race nor any other important
organisms will exist as we know them today, because
once you start modifying organisms through genetic engineering
there is no reason to stop at any particular point,
so that the modifications will probably continue until man
and other organisms have been utterly transformed.
.....
technology is creating for human beings a new physical
and social environment radically different from the spectrum
of environments to which natural selection has adapted
the human race physically and psychologically. If man
is not adjusted to this new environment by being artifi-
cially re-engineered, then he will be adapted to it through
a long and painful process of natural selection. The former
is far more likely than the latter.
---

Unfortunately, Ted Kaczynski made wrong conclusions from his insights.
Instead of accepting technological and social progress, Ted decided to fight against it.
And fight it in a way that is totally disrespectful to other people.

So, while having very high IQ and capable mind, Ted turned out to be angry and vindictive loner, falling into basic mental traps at his social and economic reasonings.

War Machine

War Machine is a funny political satire movie (at least for the first 30 minutes of it) with Brad Pitt and ""Eric" from "That '70s Show".

===================
You do whatever you can to stimulate the local economy.
- Heroin is the only thing bringing money into the area.
Not that I like to think where the money is going to, exactly, but money keeps the people happy, so we're rolling with that.
- Can't they grow something else?
- Yeah, they could grow cotton. Cotton would grow here.
- Why don't they grow cotton, then?
- Because the United States Congress will not allow any United States aid and development funds to be directed towards the cultivation of a crop that will end up on the world market in competition with US farmers.
- Oh.
- Which pretty much rules out cotton.
- Sure.
- So we're growing heroin instead.
- Right.
- I think we're doing a pretty good job here, sir.
===================
The reality is a little bit more nuanced though.

The Bourne Identity

What exactly does "ЛШТШФУМ Ащьф" mean and how come it translates into "KINIAEV Foma"?

Update:
They fixed it in the second part - "The Bourne Supremacy".
Now it is "КИНИЯЕВ Фома".
But then they changed passport's serial number from "50№0287846" to "51№7106126".

The Green Prince

Just watched The Green Prince: the documentary about how the oldest son of one of Hamas leaders spies for Israeli intelligence and then later on goes public with that story.

Aside of main protagonist making unusual choices, the film also shows how Israeli intelligence operates (including how much they know about Hamas), how immigration system in the US works and how a top spy can retire.

The Baader Meinhof Complex

Just watched The Baader Meinhof Complex movie.
It's a very impressive mixture of modern actor's play and documentary about left-wing German terrorists in 1960-s and 1970-s.
One of surprises of the movie was that Soviet Union was never mention -- like it didn't exist at all (consider that the movie is about _left_ wing terrorists).
Main playfield is Germany, but few other countries are mentioned, including the United States, Yemen, and Somalia.

The movie is not for everyone. It starts with tons of nudity and has lots of blood and violence in it.
Modern world seems pretty calm and safe in comparison.
